2017 BMC GRANFONDO GF02 ULTEGRA
When you’re not ready for the WorldTour, you don’t necessarily need a WorldTour-ready bike. The BMC Granfondo GF02 Ultegra Bike takes you most of the way there, by providing a frame that has identical geometry and characteristics as the GF01, just fabricated out of lower-modulus carbon. The GF02 provides the same steering and comfort features as the GF01. BMC even included the same integrated chain catcher above the bottom bracket.
The Granfondo platform, aka GF, was designed for riding the cobblestones, but the engineers at BMC knew that a bike that was stable and comfortable on pave would also be a good bike for riders looking for a stable and comfortable daily bike. This is referred to as an endurance bike, but the geometry is classic road bike. Thanks to a greater bottom bracket drop, longer wheelbase, and slacker head angle than their SLR frames, the bike is more stable. Thanks to a taller head tube and shorter, albeit sloping top tube, it's easy to both feel like you're riding a compact frame by the saddle, yet have the stem very close to the head tube for greater sprinting stiffness.
The Granfondo frame has a rare blend of rigidity and flex to it. Tall chain stays, a wide BB86 bottom bracket shell, a massive down tube, a tapered 1 1/8" to 1 1/2" steerer all contribute to turning your energy into speed. The Tuned Compliance Concept, TCC, takes more than just an edge off the road vibrations, it dramatically damps them. This is where the angle compliance rear dropouts and fork tips accentuate the TCC stays and fork blades, making the ride plush. TCC is also applied to the carbon compliancepost to let the post flex before you feel the road pushing up through the saddle.
Onto this platform are hung the Ultegra 6800 components. Shimano trickles down innovation. This 22-speed group benefited from the work done on Dura-Ace 9000, and the ways Shimano figured out how to economize the production process. Ergonomics, shifting, braking, drive train rigidity feel largely the same, the difference is in the finish and the materials. The carbon brifter levers feel great in the hand, have adjustable reach, and have fast, efficient shifting action. The new dual-pivot calipers possess great modulation and work well with wide rims and tires-fitting 28mm wide rubber is easy. The four-arm crank, sporting compact 50/34 rings, drives an Ultegra chain over an eleven-speed 11-32 cassette.
Wheels are Shimano's dependable WH-RS11. These look like race wheels, but they've got the durability of training mules. They'll gladly rack up hard miles, especially with the 25mm Continental Ultra Sport 2 SL folding tires they come equipped with. These take a long-lasting tread and a casing that sits firmly between supple racing and rough training.
This bike is also upgrade-ready. The bottom bracket shell can adapt to most cranks on the market. The external cabling can be removed and you can run electronic wiring and battery internally if you choose to go for battery powered shifting. This is DTI, Dual Transmission Integration.
The BMC Granfondo GF02 Ultegra Bike is a modern classic, marrying dramatic carbon shaping and engineering know-how to deliver a time-proven ride.
